Locksmith Key Codes – Lockaid
By Vic Hurlstorm | July 24, 2010
Key codes are used by locksmiths to create keys. Key codes are also known as alphanumeric codes since they involve the use of letters and numbers. Key codes are generated in a random manner and provide an identity to a key that is different from that of other keys. Locksmiths are trained to make new keys, thus they can decipher the key code for any lock.
There are several types of key codes used. Direct digit key code is one type of key code used. Every digit on a digit key code is associated with a cut in the key. Several lock manufacturers put the key code on the key. Every digit is related to a pin on the key and thus, digit key codes are longer than other codes. The second key code uses a pattern between the code and the key. Mathematical tricks are used in this type of key code and hence this code isn’t a straightforward one where each digit corresponds to the depth of the cut. The third type of key code is more complicated in nature and warrants the use of a codebook to be deciphered. The locksmith will require a codebook as there isn’t any pattern that corresponds to the cuts on the key. Due to the increasing use of computers, locksmiths can now buy computer programs to obtain more information on key codes. You needn’t worry about security since the software is copy-protected.
Locksmith key codes are usually categorized into 2 types; blind codes and bitting codes. Since majority of the key codes are blind key codes, a computer program or codebook is needed to convert them into bitting codes. However, for security purposes, only licensed locksmiths can have access to these codebooks and computer programs. Locksmiths use the bitting codes on blank keys to make the new key.
This locksmith key coding system is being used almost everywhere. This system provides enhanced security since there is only one code used per key. Keys cannot be duplicated erroneously since computers won’t generate a code that has already been created. You are thus assured that your property is safe as only you have the keys to the locks that protect it.
